Why does concrete crack and spall here?
Our freeze and thaw winters and the clay soil are hard on concrete. Water works into a slab, freezes, and lifts it, and the ground heaves as it freezes. We control it with a compacted base, the right rebar and thickness, control joints, and air entrained concrete, then seal it so winter ice melt doesn't scale the surface.
